In situ habitat selection by settling larvae of marine soft-sediment invertebrates

Article Abstract:

Settling larvae of marine soft-sediment invertebrates and their in situ habitat selection are discussed in relation to testing whether selectivity contributes to distributional patterns of benthic infauna. Three reciprocal sediment transplant experiments at 15-m-deep coarse- and muddy-sand sites were carried out on the continental shelf near Tuckerton, NJ. Differences in larval supply time scales of weeks and over kilometers can affect settlement intensity, but habitat selection by settling larvae of some species of soft-sediment invertebrates may set initial distribution patterns

The aquatic insect Chaoborus as a biomonitor of trace metals in lakes

Article Abstract:

The article discusses the biological effect of trace metals on aquatic organisms. Experiments to determine that Chaoborus larvae may be biomonitors of trace metal concentration in lakes are presented.
