Article Abstract:
Meteorologist and mathematician Mikhail A. Alaka died on Mar. 7, 1996, after a distinguished career in several weather bureaus worldwide. Alaka worked as a weather forecaster with the Iraqi Meteorological Service for several years before joining the Investigation Section of the World Meteorological Organization Secretariat as deputy chief and technical officer in 1955. He then served as a research meteorologist for the National Hurricane Research Project in Miami, FL and was chief of the Technique Development Laboratory's Special Projects Branch until 1967. Alaka also published a number of papers on atmospheric science.

Christian E. Junge, 1912-1996
Article Abstract:
Multiawarded meteorologist Christian E. Junge, the father of atmospheric chemistry, passed away on Jun. 18, 1996 in Uberlingen, Germany. He was 83. He named and created the complete science of atmospheric chemistry through his work and his book 'Atmospheric Chemistry and Radioactivity' which was published in 1963. He began his investigations on atmospheric aerosol in Germany in the 1930s, after which he went to the US for further research. He returned to Germany in 1962 and taught meteorology at the University of Mainz. He also served as director of the Max-Planck-Institute for Chemistry.
