Optimal foraging: the importance of environmental stochasticity and accuracyin parameter estimation

Article Abstract:

The effect of environmental stochasticity on the effectiveness of optimal foraging models was examined. Environmental stochasticity arises from the forager's imperfect knowledge of its, which previous optimal foraging models have ignored. A forager thus makes a wrong decision about expected food energy content and handling time, both taken as parameters in optimal foraging models, when it pursues non-food items.Incorporation into the Engen and Stenseth theorem of a relationship between what the forager observes and what the actual situation is showed that for optimal foraging models to be effective, parameter estimates need to be as accurate as possible.

A comment on in-group/out-group comparisons for fluctuating asymmetry based on trait values from the left or right sides of an individual

Article Abstract:

G.M. Clarke's argument that the fluctuating asymmetry (FA) of in-group and out-group can be compared by examining the right and left sides of individual trait values invite comment. Clark's approach in studying the FA of in-group and out-group individuals is flawed since this will provide artifact results and also reflect differences between the two groups, which should not be possible. The approach suggested by Soule and Cuzin-Roudy is more accurate because they showed the relationship between instability and trait values.

Optimal harvesting of fluctuating populations with a risk of extinction

Article Abstract:

Diffusion theory of optimal harvesting of fluctuating populations includes the risk of extinction from demographic and environment stochastics. Formulas for the mean time of extinction, the expected cumulative harvest before extinction and the mean and variance of annual harvest helps to derive optimal harvesting strategies which maximize the expected cumulative yield before extinction.
