Paternal effects of offspring quality in Campis radicans

Article Abstract:

The patterns of fruit abortion with respect to paternity were investigated in the woody climber Campsis radicans. The purpose of the study was to determine whether maternal selectivity through fruit abortion occurs as a means of enhancing the genetic quality of offspring. The results showed that patterns of maternal discrimination among outcross pollen from different donors with varying fitness is correlated with enhanced genetic quality of offspring.

Is founder-flush speciation defensible?

Article Abstract:

Slatkin (1996) has proposed that founder-flush events facilitate accelerated evolution and speciation in contrast to large randomly mating populations. He has argued that, in a rapidly growing population, there is weak genetic drift and that the best time for selection is during and immediately after the period of fast growth. However, it is suggested that Slatkin's conclusion may be flawed because it was partly based on impractical assumptions.

Evolutionary rates in partially self-fertilizing species

Article Abstract:

Models were developed to show the rates of fixation of mutant recessive genes in partially self-fertilizing plants. The results showed that in a large population, a moderate rate of selfing can increase the probability of fixation of a favorable recessive mutation. If favorable recessive mutations were more common that favorable dominant mutations, partially self-fertilizing populations should frequently fix recessive alleles by selection.
