Penetration of ultraviolet radiation in the waters of the estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence

Article Abstract:

Penetration of ultraviolet radiation into the waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and its estuary were measured at 1-nm increments in the surface waters, 9/96, 6/97 and 9/97. Correlation coefficients between dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and the diffuse attenuation coefficient (K(sub.d)), between chlorophyll a and K(sub.d), and between chlorophyll a and DOC are given. It appears from the spectral variation of K(sub.d) that yellow substance is responsible for UV attenuation in the studied waters and that DOC is therefore responsible.

Trophic ecology of massive shrimp aggregations at a Mid-Altantic Ridge hydrothermal vent site

Article Abstract:

Molecular techniques were combined in an investigation of nutritional sources for massive shrimp aggregations at hydrothermal vents in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Topics include stable isotope ratios, quantification of epibionts in shrimp guts, and autotrophic potential of implied food sources and shrimp tissues.
