Photosynthetic production and photoadaptation of phototrophic sulfur bacteria in Lake Cadagno (Switzerland)

Article Abstract:

Lake Cadagno is a meromictic lake in the central Swiss Alps containing a dense population of phototrophic sulfur bacteria, with Chromatium okenii as the dominant species. Most of the lake's bacterial population resides at light intensities that permit only weak photosynthesis. The layer of high photosynthetic activity is limited to a few centimeters at the depth of optimal photosynthesis. Light utilization efficiency and quantum yield are both far below the potential maxima.

Internal wave weather in a stratified lake

Article Abstract:

Study of internal wave weather in a stratified lake in Japan, Lake Biwa, is discussed. Data from fast-response, high-resolution thermistor chains in the lake was used to determine the characteristics of water column response to the wind forcing. Variability of the internal wave spectrum is related to energy flux from basin-scale waves to higher frequency internal waves and to dissipation in the lake.
