Picoplankton and nanplankton and their trophic coupling in surface waters of the Sargasso Sea south of Bermuda

Article Abstract:

Oceanographers conducted studies in the Sargasso Sea south of Bermuda to examine rates of bacterial growth and picoplankton consumption by microbial consumers. Bacterial growth rates were estimated from thymidine (TdR) incorporation rates, and fluorescently labeled prey were used to determine grazing rates. Net growth rates were obtained by subtracting picoplankton mortality rates from bacterial TdR growth rate estimates.

Evidence for a clade-specific temporal and spatial separation in ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase gene expression in phytoplankton populations off Cape Hatteras and Bermuda

Article Abstract:

Expression of the gene rbcL has been studied in coastal populations of phytoplankton off Cape Hatteras and in oligotrophic oceanic picoplankton around Bermuda. The gene governs ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RUBISCO), the main enzyme for carbon fixation. Evidence suggests that the two clades, cyanobacterial/chlorophytic and chromophytic, occupy clade-specific niches in time, space and cell size.
