Stability and meromixis in a water-filled mine pit

Article Abstract:

A study of the hydrodynamics of a pit-lake was conducted in British Columbia. The pit-lake formed when water filled a disused mine pit. The pit-lake has salinity stratification to a significant degree, which prevents turnover. The salinity and temperature profiles are unchanged beneath the epilimnion when turnover would be expected. Double diffusion was expected, but only weak evidence of it was found. There was evidence of variable inflow and significant rates of diffusion, causing a warm salty pool to form intermittently at the base of the water column.

Current meters for measurement of low-speed velocities in ice-covered lakes

Article Abstract:

A drag wire current meter and an acoustic current meter have been developed for measuring low-speed currents in ice-covered lakes. Topics discussed include in situ measurements, in situ errors, sensor rotation procedure, and comparisons of the two current meters.

Field study on currents in a shallow, ice-covered lake

Article Abstract:

A field study has been conducted of currents and circulation characteristics of a shallow ice-covered lake, Lake Vendyurskoe in Karelia, Russia. Topics discussed include oscillating currents, their uninodal seiche nature, and mean currents, which are geostrophic.
