Structural outline of a Tertiary basement-cored uplift/inversion structure in western Spitsbergen, Svalbard: kinematics and controlling factors

Article Abstract:

A study of the Tertiary fold-and-thrust belt of Spitsbergen, Svalbard, reveals the effects of pre-Tertiary structural and sedimentological characteristics in the kinematic evolution and nature of transformation of the location to macro-and mesoscale structures. Among other factors, the nature of structural changes in the fold complex is attributed to the anisotropies in the metamorphic basement and facies changes in Carboniferous sedimentary strata.

Tertiary or Cretaceous age for Spitsbergen's fold-thrust belt on the Barents shelf

Article Abstract:

Spitsbergen Island's fold-thrust belt on the Barents shelf most likely developed during the Tertiary era. Physical evidence includes involvement of Tertiary strata in fold-thrust structures, the sedimentology of the Tertian basin strata, and the studies of paleo-stress field evolution indicating Paleocene to Eocene fold-thrust development. Field and geochronological evidence also points to a Tertiary thermal event.

Tertiary West Spitsbergen fold and thrust belt on Broggerhalvoya, Svalbard; structural evolution and kinematics

Article Abstract:

Research into the structures and kinematic evolution of thrusting on Broggerhalvoya, Svalbard, is presented. It was found that the Tertiary fold and thrust belt has a NE vergent pile of nine thrust sheets. This pile can be split into three structural levels.
