Temperature-dependent production of marine copepods: a global synthesis

Article Abstract:

A method to improve the measurements of biomass and growth rate, which are the key variables needed to estimate production of marine copepods is presented. Analysis of published estimates of generation time of various copepod species under different temperature regimes demonstrated convincingly that growth rate is temperature dependent. It was further demonstrated that temporal and spatial variation in biomass is greater than variation in individual growth rates. Therefore, estimates of marine copepod production can be improved significantly with better estimates of biomass.

First evidence of some dinoflagellates reducing male copepod fertilization capacity

Article Abstract:

Feeding on certain dinoflagellates can reduce sperm quality and lead to hatching failure in Temora stylifera. Six to twelve days of continuous feeding on Prorocentrum micans, Gymnodinium sanguinium, and Gonyaulax polyedra was found to cause significant change in spermatophore production as well as reduced fertilization capacity of male sperm. No change in hatching success occurred with diets of the dinoflagellate P. minimum and the prymnesiophycean Isochrysis galbana.
