The Prince of Wales Formation - post flood basalt alkali volcanism in the Tertiary of East Greenland

Article Abstract:

The Prince of Wales Formation in the Tertiary of East Greenland consists of a layer of alkali lavas that cover the tholeiite flood basalts in the Prince of Wales Mountain nunataks. The lavas contain mainly porphyritic picrites, ankaramites, hawaiites and incompatible elements. This late alkali magmatism originated in the peripheral region of the East Greenland plume under a cap of continental lithosphere. Compared to tholeiite flood basalts, the alkali lavas contain less 143Nd/144Nd and more 87Sr/86Sr. Their composition is isotopically related to that of ocean island basalts.

Selectively contaminated magmas of the Tertiary East Greenland macrodike complex

Article Abstract:

Petrographic, chemical and isotopic analyses of related igneous rocks from the Tertiary East Greenland macrodikes were undertaken to investigate the chemical interaction between magmatic intrusions and host rocks in the dike complex. Results indicate that the composition of the rocks analyzed could not have been brought about by simple mechanical mixing. Rather, rock composition suggests that selective interdiffusion between the intrusion and the host crust took place to produce hybrid magmatic rocks.

Separation of Hf and Lu for high-precision isotope analysis of rock samples by magnetic sector-multiple collector ICP-MS

Article Abstract:

The isotopic Hf and Lu composition of rock samples was analyzed by utilizing the 'Plasma 54' multiple-collector inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometer (MC-ICP-MS). The 'Plasma 54' MC-ICP-MS generated high-precision Lu-Hf isotopic measurements of Hf and Lu content in rock samples due to enhanced Hf sensitivity. The plasma MS can also be utilized for the detection of minute traces of Hf in mafic and ultramafic rocks or mineral separates such as zircon.
