Vertical secondary flows in submersed plant-like arrays

Article Abstract:

Vertical secondary flows of the benthic boundary layer (BBL) area are discussed as they relate to submerged plant-like arrays. Pressure gradients created vertical secondary flows with possible ecological significance for benthic fauna and macrophytes. Secondary flows of up to 15% of the local longitudinal velocity were set up behind individual obstructions within a submerged plant-like or animal tube array and for conditions like those found in aquatic canopies/colonies in the laboratory.

Particle selectivity, gut volume, and the response to a step change in diet for deposit-feeding polychaetes

Article Abstract:

Gut volume, particle selectivity, and response to a step change in diet as seen in three deposit-feeding polychaetes species are discussed. A series of experiments to look at aspects of deposit feeding relevant to studies of resource variability over short time spans were carried out. It appears that the organisms do not respond to diet changes by temporarily holding or flushing out material in the gut.
