The course of U.S. responses to global change: Can't we do better?

Article Abstract:

US policymakers have initiated and established a number of programs, initiatives and agencies to address global environmental change, beginning in the 1960s. The earliest of these was the President's Science Advisory Committee and the Environmental Science Services Administration, established in 1965. They were followed by legislation such as the Marine Resources and Engineering Act and the National Sea Grant Act, both passed in 1996. One of the latest environmental initiatives launched in the US is the Global Change Research Program which was started in 1989.

Trends in global temperature

Article Abstract:

Statistical models may be used to measure global climate changes. These models use statistical trend estimation and treat climate data as serially correlated, thereby producing precise estimates. The use of these models has resulted in data implying that a change in global temperature over the past century has occurred, although the estimate of change has a degree of uncertainty of more or less .2 degrees Celsius. The models have also shown that observed temperature data yields imprecise information regarding climate sensitivity.

Satellite and surface temperature data at odds?

Article Abstract:

Satellite and surface temperature data may differ slightly, but multiple data sets may be valuable in detecting global temperature changes. Satellite data is provided by microwave sounding units on satellites.
