The kinematic history of the Pennine Nappes east of the Lepontine Dome: implications for the tectonic evolution of the Central Alps

Article Abstract:

The kinematic history of the Pennine nappes in the eastern central alps is presented. Four phases mark the structural and strain development of the Pennine zone. In the first period, E-W oriented stretching of Cretaceous/ lower tertiary age occured. Nappe movement and incipient strike-slip motion along the Periadriatic line occured in the second stage. Massive folding affected the nappes in the third period. The fourth period was marked by unroofing of the Lepontine dome which directed eastern Central Alps movement.

The timing of and nature of greenschist facies deformation and metamorphism in the upper Pennine Alps

Article Abstract:

The 40Ar/39Ar and Rb-Sr ages on micas and U-Pb ages for sphenes and amphiboles from the upper Pennine Alps were studies and showed that greenschist assemblages developed at circa 44 Ma in the Zermatt-Saas zone of the footwall and at circa 40 Ma in the thrust zone. Rapid cooling inferred for the Zermatt-Saas ophiolites in the mid-Eocene may document either the extensional unroofing of the ophiolite over the underlying Monte Rosa massif or their tectonic emplacement.

Kinematic analysis of the Taiwan Slate Belt

Article Abstract:

The fact that deformation in the Hsuehshan belt is dominated by layer-parallel shortening and pure shear is evident in the structural geometries and strain histories of rocks from the Taiwan Slate Belt. Deformation in the Backbone belt, in contrast, included a component of top-to-the-NW simple shear. The different strain histories are due to, most probably, the differences in the tectonostratigraphic settings of the strata in the two ranges.
