A cross-country comparison of Okun's coefficient

Article Abstract:

Okun's law was tested for different countries to study the effect of economic growth on unemployment. The findings showed that employment in the Canada and United States was influenced more by economic growth than in Japan and Europe. This is attributed to US and Canada's job provisions restricting retrenchment during recessions and hiring additional workforce during company expansion. Also, the labor markets in the two countries are more liberal compared to those in Italy, France, Germany, United Kingdom and Japan.

Business cycle in Czechoslovakia under central planning: were credit shocks causing it?

Article Abstract:

An analysis of credit market influence on the occurrence of business cyclicality in Czechoslovakia in the 1970s and 1980s reveals that credit shocks at least partially explain its occurrence. The results seem to indirectly support the inference that credit squeeze was a major factor in industrial output declines since monetary policy was not able to accomodate the adverse shocks experienced between 1980 and 1990.

Tariff reduction, tax replacement, and implications for income distribution in China

Article Abstract:

An analysis of tariff reduction and tax replacement effects on income distribution in China reveals that trade liberalization has the potential to enhance economic efficiency and income equality in the country. The study also reveals that a progressive income tax system is one of the most appropriate tax systems that the Chinese government can choose to replace lost tariff revenue due to trade liberalization.
