Absorptive capability and economic growth: how do countries catch-up?

Article Abstract:

An empirical investigation is conducted regarding the importance of technological catch-up in explaining productivity growth in a sample of countries since the 1960s. It indicates that the, absorptive capability is a factor in explaining growth, with the most robust finding that countries with relatively high numbers of students studying science or engineering abroad experience faster subsequent growth.

Exit, voice and the evolution of industrial districts: the case of the post-World War II economic development of Prato

Article Abstract:

The application of the Hirschmanian exit-voice approach to the development of the industrial districts is analyzed. Also, an analysis of the post-World War II evolution of the Prato district is done, which in turn, helps to explain how the industrial district competitive advantage can be reproduced over time during periods of regular development.

Structural economic dynamics: an alternative approach to North-South models

Article Abstract:

The analysis of uneven development is carried out in a framework where changes in demand composition are consistent with Engel's Law. One case in which preference is homothetic and there is capital dependence, showing that the latter assumption is sufficient to explain the inequalities between poor and rich regions is discussed.
