America Debates Secrecy in Science

Article Abstract:

A new Department of Defense regulation will allow government officials to preview papers of academic scientists, whose research was supported by the Department of Defense, before publication. This is an attempt by the government to plug leaks of scientific and technological information. University administrators feel only research which directly relates to national security may be classified. However, Pentagon officials believe university scientists will be reluctant to give up lucrative Defense Department contracts.

General Pinochet of Chile is under pressure from the United States and the local Catholic Church to restore democracy in Chile. The General's interior minister, Sergio Jarpa, is helping secure conciliation with the opposition. Pinochet has control of government by referendum until 1989.
