Asian currency and financial crises: lessons from vulnerability, crisis and collapse

Article Abstract:

The financial crisis that struck East Asia in 1997 was precipitated by three factors: vulnerability to currency crisis arising from liberalization of the economy under a pegged-exchange rate regime, negative shocks emanating from devaluation, and fears of sovereign insolvency in the wake of the crisis. The Asian crisis exposed many flaws in the macroeconomic policies of East Asia's once booming countries. It also exposed the inability of financial institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund to provide solutions to the countries most affected by the East Asian crisis.

The IMF After the Asian Crisis; Merits and Limitations of the 'Long-term Development Partner' Role

Article Abstract:

The International Monetary Fund has been called upon to revert to focusing on its core competencies, i.e, provide financing only to prevent crises and mitigating them should they occur, thus enabling the private sector a greater role in providing finance to poorer countries. This paper suggests that the IMF should not fully scale back its role but should retain with suitable reforms its broader role.
