Assisting in the transformation of the Russian economy

Article Abstract:

Technical assistance programs are being implemented to assist Russia in its transition from a planned economy to a market economy. The different models of technical assistance applied in two Russian cities are presented. The Freedom Support Act and the USIA seminars seem to be very effective. Business opportunities in Russia will benefit the US business community. Foundations of trust and commercial ties between the US and Russia are important also.

A homegrown loan program

Article Abstract:

Successful economic development in a community entails the participation of financial institutions and financing of a business project. The Industrial Initiative program of Kandiyohi County, MN, is a loan program which is easy to use and is devoid of the usual red tape. Its success proves that individuals willing to make a stake at investing in their communities and an active financial sector can direct the community's future.
