Business retention: the basics and beyond

Article Abstract:

Economic development professionals can help preserve their communities' existing business base by communicating to existing businesses their importance to the community and by offering business assistance programs. To ensure the success of their business retention initiatives, economic development planners must have a thorough knowledge of their business base, community and resources. They must be able to leverage their resources to create linkages between area businesses and resources providers, and to communicate well with the two groups. The performance of the program should be assessed periodically.

Quality of life and economic development policy

Article Abstract:

Most quality-of-life studies are not accurate and should not be made as basis for economic development policy-making. Their reliance on a common set factors for all areas make quality-of-life ranking methods ineffective because the factors that attract economic activities vary from industry to industry. Thus, development offices should determine the local quality-of-life factors and focus on their actions based on local resources and opportunities.

Article Abstract:

The benefits of diversifying the members of The American Economic Development Council are demonstrated by the experience of the City of Johnson City, TN. It is shown how enterprising governments have been able to use the power of the free market in the creation of wealth. This implies that public-sector practitioners have a role to play in community planning and implementing strategies.
