Backers for Bugs to Space Stations Are Lobbying Congress

Article Abstract:

Two space feats are planned by the National Space and Aeronautics Administration (NASA) for early 1984. In February a manned-maneuvering unit, a specially equipped backpack, will be tried and in April the unit will be used when an astronaut attempts to stop a spinning satellite to repair it. The satellite is an astronomical observatory (SMM) which was designed to accommodate repairs in space. If the astronauts are unable to accomplish the repair, they will attempt to bring it back to earth. Space-repair of satellites will open up new sources of revenue for the shuttle flights and provide a justification for the building of shuttle-operated orbital maneuvering vehicles which could reach the important communications satellites.
