Article Abstract:

Bidders for the United States government's Landsat remote-sensing system include Hughes Aircraft Corporation, TRW and the Radio Corporation of America (RCA). Landsat has primarily been used to detect diseased crops, locate water sources and geological faults. It is estimated that a strong private demand will not develop for at least five years. Bidders are likely to seek a substantial initial government subsidy. Government regulations may impair the profitability of Landsat when privately managed.

Britain's Thatcher Administration is committed to reducing the number of nationalized industries. Critics view privatization with alarm. They fear the end of the welfare state.
