Locked in the twilight zone: business retention fails the strategic value test

Article Abstract:

The business retention model currently in use is flawed because it does not produce critical information needed by the business community. Retention survey instruments typically generate information already known or easily known instead of collecting information that can be used to manage economic growth, predict business failures and identify growth industries. A more effective retention program is proposed that consists of four stages: collection of employer information, CEO interviews, data compilation and analysis, and development of a marketing plan based on findings.

Small town economic development: principles of organization

Article Abstract:

Economic development in small towns must proceed in an organized manner, starting with infrastructure development, especially its financial infrastructure. Organizing the economic development of a small town also requires that the planning process takes into consideration the inputs of all involved, from community members to the target industries executives as well as any ongoing or planned economic development efforts. The economic development body formed must also enjoy a certain amount of autonomy to be effective.
