Collaboration in R&D: an assessment of theoretical and empirical findings

Article Abstract:

Increased competition in international markets due to globalization and technological innovation has driven firms to turn to alliances with other firms and competitors in order to better their operations. Cooperation affords firms with advantages such as risk sharing, government subsidies, and access to competitor information but also poses problems in terms of start-up costs, coordination difficulties, and information control. Firms can more efficiently engage in R and D activities through provisions such as incentive compatible contracts, longitudinal relationship buildings, and proper partner selection.

Competition and innovation

Article Abstract:

Use of the Hotelling beach model of research and development (R and D) cleared up some issues on the relation between the factors of competition and innovation in industrial organization. Results revealed that economical R and D methods led to increased competition and more research investments. Market leaders were also shown to be able to use increased levels of competition to their favor by being able to invest more in R and D than competitors.
