Collectivization and China's agricultural crisis

Article Abstract:

The debate and contradictions that resulted from Justin Lin's 1990 hypothesis on the demise of Chinese agriculture from 1959-61 should produce more careful and detailed historical research. Lin's criticism of the contradictory papers by Dung and Dow, and Kung, is examined and supported theoretically and empirically. But Lin's defense of his hypothesis that the deprivation of exit rights decollectivized Chinese agriculture is assessed as overly categorical, and it is suggested that the hypothesis remain open for further study.

Ownership and the nature of the firm

Article Abstract:

Control, utilization, and alienation rights accompany firm ownership, which is linked with financing and risk-bearing roles. The institution of ownership is examined, with respect to shared ownership, firm size, and financial structure, and the nonprofit and state forms of ownership are described and weighed. The implications of the inevitable separation between owners and workers are discussed, and factors in the formation of worker organizations are outlined.

The role of exit costs in the theory of cooperative teams

Article Abstract:

The function of outside options for fostering efficient incentives in producer cooperatives and the importance of this role to modern economic experience were examined. The theory of repeated games, particularly the notion of optimal penal codes, is the main analytical tool used in the investigation. Results indicate that the range for effective execution is directly related to the cost of exit.
