Competition in European aviation: pricing policy and market structure

Article Abstract:

The effect of liberal bilateral contracts on the price structure and policies as well as market organization of air routes in Europe is evaluated through a model of firm behavior. It is shown that liberalization has caused greater product differentiation as a result of cost advantages but has not perceptibly affected market structure which is assumed to be influenced more by the access to and existence of airport facilities. The result diverges from that obtained from earlier studies on US airlines.

Market power and multimarket contact: some evidence from the Spanish hotel industry

Article Abstract:

The consequence of competition between companies in various geographic markets and product lines was investigated in the Spanish hotel industry. The proposition by Bernheim and Whinston that companies with multimarket contact can enhance their profits by reapportioning their market share among the markets in which they are operating was proven by the findings. Also, the exclusion of factors which indicate multimarket contact results into a negative bias on the impact of concentration on prices.
