The market for cooking sauces in the U.K. has seen demand rising since 1990, with retail sales in 1995 estimated at 298 million pounds sterling, against 280 million pounds sterling in 1994. The market is dominated by the wet sector, with a 79% share of sales in 1994, worth 222 million pounds sterling. The dry sector was worth 58 million pounds sterling in 1994. Leading players in the market are Campbell Foods' Homepride in the wet sector, and Colman's of Norwich in the dry sector. The market for cooking sauces is analysed in further detail.

Article Abstract:

The UK retail market for cooking sauces will grow 28% by value to 420 million pounds sterling by the year 2001 at current prices from 327 million pounds sterling in 1997. The market grew by 5% in real terms to 306 million pounds sterling in 1996 partly due to growing demand for convenience products. The sector for wet sauces in jars has good growth potential. Sales of wet Indian cooking sauces increased 8% during 1994-96, Italian 12% and oriental 17%. About 33% of people in the UK do not use cooking sauces.

A statistical review of the UK market for cooking sauces is presented. The market included both packet and wet sauces which can be used during cooking or at the start of the cooking process. It is anticipated the cooking sauce market will be worth 555 million pounds sterling by the year 2000. Canned, bottled and sauces in cartons accounted for 73.2% of the market in 1999.
