Discovering diversity in introductory economics

Article Abstract:

Introductory courses in economics need to be more inclusive of diversity and its impact on economic events. Integrating race and gender into introductory economics texts not only supplements published data but makes the study of economics more realistic. Focus should shift to the diversity among students and their interpretation of impersonal economic theories and concepts through diverse cultural perspectives. This change in emphasis necessitates the adoption of teaching techniques where students from varied socio-economic backgrounds are the major participants.

CSWEP: 25 years at a time

Article Abstract:

Women have established a strong presence at all levels of economics since Dec 1971, when the American Economic Association stated that women's progress in the profession should be encouraged. The American Economic Association and the Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession have managed to eliminate most types of overt discrimination against women. However, there is still further progress to be made. In particular, efforts must be made to ensure that economics is attractive to women at undergraduate level.

Reflections of 25 years of CSWEP

Article Abstract:

A resolution adopted by the American Economic Association on Dec 29, 1971, led to the creation of the Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession. This resolution stated that no employer should discriminate against qualified women economists and that the study of economics by women at all levels of education would be actively encouraged. It also indicated that the American Economic Association would appoint women economists as members of the editorial boards for its economics journals.
