Economic development, foreign investment and the peace process

Article Abstract:

Armed conflicts between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian security forces, three years after the 1993 peace treaty between Yassir Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin are a serious threat to the economic development in the Palestinian Territories. Deficiencies in the law include the difficulty in the entry of foreign investments and failure to ensure foreign investors of a stable economic environment.

Resolution 692 of the United Nations Security Council established the UN Compensations Commission to manage claims against Iraq for war damages resulting from Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait. Recently Iraq has taken steps to begin selling oil again on the international market, with part of the proceeds going toward compensation as required by the UN. The Commission is defining categories of claimants and setting limits on the awards available to each, but it remains to be seen how these payments will be enforced.
