Estimating demand elasticities in a differentiated product industry: the personal computer market

Article Abstract:

A model of market demand has been formulated based on utility maximization, and market supply based on profit maximization, for goods classified on various characteristics. The demand elasticities for individual models were measured by utilizing data on personal computers. Results show that demand elasticities posted an increase over time as the brand effect on the model market share decreased. Due to the marketing of individual models, a model which is already marketed for about two years will experience more inelastic demand than a newly introduced brand.

The figure indicates that married women are less wage elastic on the employment margin than single women. on the other hand, the opposite is true when it comes to wage elasticity between married men and single men.
