'Gold Collar' technicians essential to chip industry in Greater Phoenix

Article Abstract:

The Phoenix, AZ semiconductor industry supported the 'Gold Collar' education and training program of the Maricopa Community College District aimed at ensuring the supply of skilled labor for the thriving industry. The industry-education collaboration resulted in the formation of the Maricopa Advanced Technology Education Center, which received a five-year, $4.6 mil grant from the National Science Foundation to develop and implement its training curriculum. As much as 40% of the adult population in Maricopa has attended one of the Maricopa Community College's units.

British Academy of Management (BAM) Conference 1996

Article Abstract:

The 1996 British Academy of Management Conference in September in the UK drew hundreds of management teachers. One of the highlights of the annual event was the address by Robert Locke, author of 'The Collapse of the American Management Mystique,' where he branded the US' managerial superiority as a myth, as evidenced by the success of countries such as Japan. Locke said the US may be superior in terms of logistics power but is subordinate to many countries in operational ability. He said business schools have failed to remain productive and relevant.

The new deal in employment: a conference held at City University Business School in December 1995

Article Abstract:

Human resource (HR) professionals and academicians attended a City University Business School conference in Dec. 1995 and presented their research findings and experiences on the impact of employer-employee working relationships and the implications for future HR strategies. HR consultants and practitioners, the ESSEC in France, and UK universities contributed a total of 32 papers. Some of the major findings of the conference are presented.
