Labor-service tenancy contracts in a Latin American context

Article Abstract:

The literature on the theory of agrarian organization is based on two contrasting streams of thought, one dealing with the theory of contracts and one dealing with the agrarian structure. Research on labor-service tenancy contracts in Latin America connects these two theories. These contracts create a dualistic agrarian structure and permit landlords with monopolies of land in local areas to obtain the surplus from tenants optimally.

Paternalism in agricultural labor contracts in the U.S. South: implications for the growth of the welfare state

Article Abstract:

Planters in the South during 1900-1950 used a paternalistic labor system. This system discouraged turnover and controlled the cost of monitoring workers, which reduced labor costs. This type of system used an implicit contract in which laborers exchanged their services for nonmarket goods. The automation of cotton harvesting in the 1950s eliminated the economic incentive for paternalism and expanded welfare programs.
