Evaluating the impact of the Uruguay Round results on developing countries

Article Abstract:

Scholars from eleven developing countries reevaluated the potential benefits of the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade on their economies. The potential annual gains of the Round on the global economy was estimated at four to seven percent of world gross product valued at $200 to $300 billion. The Round presents new opportunities and risks due to the reduction of trade barriers. It was concluded that the benefits to developing countries resulting from the Round agreement are still uncertain and probably incremental.

Nontariff measures and developing countries: has the Uruguay Round leveled the playing field?

Article Abstract:

The effects of the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) on the protectionist policies of Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries were evaluated. OECD countries have imposed both tariff and nontariff barriers on exports of developing countries. These trade barriers have had a negative effect on the economic growth of developing countries. It was argued that the Uruguay Round will greatly reduce the use of non-tariff trade measures among the participating countries of the GATT.

Special and differential treatment in the Millennium Round

Article Abstract:

Developing a new framework for special and differential treatment (SDT) for developing countries in terms of international trade arrangements, that can guide meaningful negotiations, is a challenge for the preparation prior to the World trade organizations forthcoming Millennium Round meeting in Seattle, WA, in Oct 1999. This conference holds opportunities for emerging states to actively use existing SDT provisions to seek the creation of new trade arrangements and instruments.
