Fighting poverty

Article Abstract:

A study of selected indicators reveals that nearly 1/3 of the population in developing countries is poor, a total greater than 1 billion people. Growth in mean expenditures is directly related to decrease in poverty. Productive use of labor is a more important factor than income transfers in reducing poverty. Basic social services are more effective in improving consumption of health and education services than cash transfers, and these services improve the income of the poor.

Have commercial banks ignored history?

Article Abstract:

The effects of previous defaults and acquired sovereignty on developing countries' bank-loan terms were investigated for the period of the 1970s. The research indicated that credit terms were not affected in a statistically significant manner by repayment problems before the 1930s but were affected by defaults occurring during and after the 1930s. Countries that were sovereign before the 1940s were charged lower rates than those that achieved sovereignty later.
