Textile and apparel protection in the United States: a general equilibrium analysis

Article Abstract:

Less-developed countries are prevented from complete participation in global trading in apparel and textile products by the United States' import restraints. The constraints must be removed under the Uruguay Round world trade talks, and the economic impact on the US must be assessed to measure the inherent structural changes, advantages and expense. The liberalisation is examined via a general-equilibrium analysis. Five upstream suppliers to the apparel and textile industries which are also protected by the US restraints are also included in the analysis.

Textiles beyond the MFA phase-out

Article Abstract:

There are indications that the MFA will be successfully phased-out by Jan 1, 2005, paving the way for more conventional trading procedures in clothing and textile in the world market. The Asian crisis, which might aid in the demise of the MFA, can also result in exports from the affected nations that are considered sold at 'dumping prices.' This development could lead to another round of protectionist measures from the importing industrialized nations.
