Grant equivalent expenditure on industrial subsidies in the post-war United Kingdom

Article Abstract:

A study has been conducted to develop a consistent series for annual expenditure by the UK central government on the totality of industrial subsidies over the period 1946-1990. A total of 125 billion pounds sterling in grant equivalent expenditure on industrial subsidy has been identified over the post-war period. Findings indicated that regional policy has performed a long-run distributive role, but that other assistance has been positively related to economic activity reflecting the demand for subsidy.

Time-series analyses results showed that regional assistance plays a long-run distributive role, while the other factors have a stabilizing function.
