New opportunity in Eastern Europe

Article Abstract:

The Free Congress Foundation's Krieble Institute sponsored a 1993 delegation to three countries formerly part of the Eastern Bloc. The delegation's aim was to give seminars on free market economics. Title industry members of the delegation offered their expertise to countries faced with privatizing real estate ownership. Real estate privatization presents problems such as the interests of owners when the property was expropriated by the government. The delegates noted the absence of some things Western business people take for granted such as capital and a functional banking system.

Home bias and high turnover

Article Abstract:

The long-term investment patterns of Canada, Germany, Japan, the US and the UK from 1970-1990 are studied. Investment in corporate equities and in government and corporate bonds are also examined. It is concluded that home bias is strong among national investment portfolios despite potentially high gains from international investments. Diversification of risk does not seem to have any influence over the composition of the portfolio of foreign securities.
