How departments of economics evaluate teaching

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the use of student evaluations of teaching and alternative or supplementary means of evaluating teaching in economic departments. Ratings on different dimensions of teaching focuses on a number of variables, such as instructor enthusiasm and organization. Results indicated that peer review of teaching is utilized by only 37% of the economics departments at research universities. Moreover, classroom observations is the most common type of peer review of teaching.

Chalk and talk: a national survey on teaching undergraduate economics

Article Abstract:

A survey on the teaching of economic courses at the college level is conducted to determine the use of alternative teaching techniques for said courses. 3,059 academicians and economics professors were selected as respondents for the study. Survey results show variances in grading methods used and limitations in the use of term-paper projects. Most importantly, the survey found that majority of the respondents refuse to apply alternative methods of teaching.

An appraisal of economics content in the history, social studies, civics, and geography national standards

Article Abstract:

The relevance and accuracy of the economic contents in the national standards of economics-related disciplines are identified and appraised at the K-12 level. The conceptual flaws found in history, civics, geography and social studies national standards include overdependence on the relevance of government planning, limited emphasis of the costs of economic development, and a lack of acknowledgment of the part played by markets in resource allocation.
