Import competition, government subsidies, and trade with developing countries

Article Abstract:

Government support to import-threatened industries seems to hinder ythe growth of bilateral trade between developed and developing countries. This is indicated by a study of the subsidy and other adjustment programs implemented by major Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development countries in the textile, clothing and footwear sectors. Government subsidies revitalize the import-threatened industries through sustained investments in capital equipmnet, thus fostering permanent hindrances to bilateral trade.
