Informal economy cushions hard times for many Yemenis

Article Abstract:

Informal economic activity has mitigated economic hardship in Yemen, the country formed on May 22, 1990 when North Yemen united with South Yemen. Reduced foreign aid and the repatriation of 850,000 Yemenis following Yemen's support for Iraq in the Persian Gulf War caused most of the country's current economic difficulties. However, the country's oil industry, which produced 90% of Yemen's export earnings in 1991, will probably continue to grow. Other sectors likely to be attractive to foreign companies are agriculture, fisheries, mining and quarrying and light industry such as food processing.
