Institutional advantage: a way into strategic management in not-for-profit organizations

Article Abstract:

The notion of implementing strategic management in nonprofit organizations is increasing in popularity. Many not-for-profit entities are increasingly open to the idea of embracing management techniques which have proven to be successful in the private sector. However, such strategic tools as mission statements, industry attractiveness, matching resources and opportunities, and competitive advantage are not suitable to the nonprofit context. The concept of institutional advantage is recommended for strategic planning in the nonprofit sector.

It is argued that combining these three factors with the organization's objectives, goals and visions will enable firms to gain competitive advantage and create shareholder value.

Article Abstract:

The Ashridge Strategic Management Centre was established in 1987 to research the management of multibusiness companies. Studies conducted with 16 major British firms resulted in the identification of three common management styles, namely, strategic planning, strategic control and financial control. It was also found that a large number of multibusiness firms do not create value for their business.
