Article Abstract:

Trade has a significant impact on an economy's growth, this regression analysis of changes in decade growth has determined. To a lesser, but still important, degree, improvements in a country's institutions will also have a positive, significant effect on economic growth.

This critique of economic research on international trade and improved institutions' effects on a country's economic growth finds that the instruments chosen provide imprecise, even weird, results. Regressions are simply a means for estimating a level effect.

Analysis of Chinese economic policy is presented, based on evaluation of China's foreign assets and balance of payments. Emergence of China as net foreign creditor is discussed.
