Korea

Article Abstract:

Korea is planning to open its labor market to foreign labor as a result of labor shortages due to economic and social development. Foreign labor has entered the economy, as the Korean labor-intensive industries find it difficult to find Korean workers. However, the country lacks a definite policy concerning foreign labor and depends on the temporary foreign trainee system to solve labor problems of small industries because the Korean government believes the labor shortage problem can be resolved through efficient utilization of domestic labor. Thus, Korea will most likely witness a rise in illegal foreign workers.

Labour market adjustments and migration in Thailand

Article Abstract:

Migration patterns in Thailand reveal the transformation from an agrarian to an industrial economy, along with the shifts in the labor market. Income gaps between urban and rural areas lead to internal interregional migration towards urban cities, such as Bangkok. Thais emigrate to the Middle East and other high-income countries due to imbalance in production structures and human resources. Foreign workers in Thailand consist of illegal immigrants and skilled professionals, catering to the vacancies created by a lack of skilled labor. Policies need to address the problem of illegal migration.

Japan

Article Abstract:

Japan will require unskilled foreign labor due to labor shortages in low-wage industries, although transfer of business activities to other countries may reduce the demand for foreign labor. Japan will have to face immigration pressures due to a wide gap in wages and job opportunities between Japan and the sending countries. The appreciation of the yen and the labor shortages due to population aging will also increase the pressure. Japan is trying to form policy measures for job trainees and solve the problem of illegal workers and the exploitation of legal workers.
