Long-run effects of APEC trade liberalisation: an applied general equilibrium analysis

Article Abstract:

Tariff reduction in Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation member countries has been simulated using the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) general equilibrium model. GTAP is a multi-region CGE model for comparative-static analysis of trade policies. In the study, GTAP is used in simulating 37 commodity types and 20 world regions. Findings reveal trade liberalization increases capital stock and GDP for all regions except the Rest of the World. It reduces domestic prices of imported goods which decreases the costs of constructing capital.

Merchandise trade in the APEC Region: is there scope for liberalization on an MFN basis?

Article Abstract:

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation was established in line with the concept of open regionalism. This idea means that trade relations with member countries would not prevent developing and strengthening economic relations with nations outside the scope of the treaty. The application of the concept to merchandise trade could either be in the form of a Free Trade Area or the adoption of the Most Favored Nation principle of the GATT. The latter is recommended.

A CGE approach to modelling carbon dioxide emissions control in Canada and the United States

Article Abstract:

The components of a computable general-equilibrium model used for analyzing the relationship of environmental policy and the economy in Canada are described. The model analyzes resource allocation and shifts in real income as a result of emission control policies. One important finding points to the consequent decline in real income as a result of the increase in carbon taxes. This finding should guide environmental policymakers in their goal setting.
