Mad Dogs and Expatriates

Article Abstract:

Working in foreign countries is stressful. An American survey reveals that about one in three American expatriates does not finish his assignment. European companies are found to have a one-in-seven rate of failure. A psychiatrist feels that companies do not research a family thoroughly enough before giving foreign assignments. An employee who is unsuccessful in a foreign post is costly to the company. Many businesses are training nationals to fill jobs once held by expatriates and sending in executives as consultants on an annual schedule.

Biting the Bullet

Article Abstract:

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has reported findings of the poison ethylene dibromide (EDB) in grain-based foods. Although cooking kills most or all of the chemical, there are areas of uncertainty. The EPA is likely to issue guidelines. Grain and fruit producers and grocery manufacturers oppose rules. An alternative to EDB may be available within two years.
