Market power in aftermarkets

Article Abstract:

The case of Eastman Kodak Co. versus Image Technical Services Inc. is the most recent example of an antitrust case involving aftermarkets. A manufacturer may have significant market power in the aftermarket and use it to cause aftermarket prices to rise. The reasons why aftermarket prices are high are discussed. The implications of high aftermarket prices for antitrust are also examined. It is shown that consumers pay a competitive package price even if they are totally uninformed about the market upon purchase of the equipment.
