Measuring and comparing progress in APEC

Article Abstract:

Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum officials have been placing increasing emphasis on comparability as attention has been given to some tactical elements of progress towards APEC's liberalization goals. Within this framework, there are two distinct concepts of comparability: detailed comparability and aggregate comparability. Both must be implemented in order to boost productive co-operation within APEC. The organization's repeated game structure should allow it to establish a dynamic process to improve its action plans.

Regional integration APEC style: lessons from regional integration EU style

Article Abstract:

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) has sought to encourage liberalization in member states on a voluntary basis. This type of liberalization is in contrast to the European Union (EU) policy of binding internal liberalization. Disparities in timing can give rise to distortions. Peer pressure may not be a strong enough driving force to foster liberalization in APEC countries. Unconcerted unilateral liberalization is the most preferable approcah, but some lessons could be learnt by APEC from the EU.

AFTA and the global track

Article Abstract:

The Assn of South East Asian Nations' (ASEAN) pursuit of regional and multilateral trade relationships is analyzed. It is argued that ASEAN's regional efforts are aimed at fueling economic integration and attracting foreign direct investments. On the other hand, its multilateral initiatives via the ASEAN Free Trade Area, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation and World Trade Organization have increased market access and prevented the trade diversion costs of regional preferences.
