Modeling market shares of the leading personal automobile insurance companies

Article Abstract:

An analysis of private passenger car insurance firms' market shares reveals that practices such as price-cutting and commission-reduction are not relied on by the companies to improve their market status. The results indicate that computerization, automation and promotional activities play an important role in determining a company's market position. An interesting result is the finding that clients are willing to pay higher in exchange for personalized attention.

The structure of the property/casualty insurance industry

Article Abstract:

The structure of the property/casualty insurance industry is studied. It is argued that the industry has no economies of scope while economies of scale exist only for the smallest firms. It is also shown the property/casualty firms cannot dominate the market by virtue of their size or product offerings since large firms exhibit diseconomies of scale for firms in the upper quartile size class.
