A primer for designers

Article Abstract:

Industrial designers should consider the needs of consumers when designing a product. Efficient design should allow consumers the luxury of operating the most complex piece of equipment with utmost ease and facility. However, such is not the case as most equipment baffle consumers with a confusing set of functions. To solve their problems, industrial designers have sought the assistance of trained psychologists who help provide a clearer analysis of the user feedback process, thereby enhancing product design. The presence of psychologists in several design groups portends well for the future of product development and design.

Mortgage lending in Boston: interpreting HMDA data

Article Abstract:

Race plays a major role in mortgage lending. Reports through the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act reveal that minorities are more likely to be refused mortgage loans than whites. This implies that racial discrimination exists in the mortgage lending business despite lack of evidence that belonging to the white race is a guarantee that loans will be paid. Leaders, civic groups and the state must cooperate to correct this unfair practice.
