Mining and quarrying: It's a buyer's market

Article Abstract:

Although many manufacturers produce a variety of mining and quarrying equipment, most of the world's big hydraulic excavator/truck market is dominated by a few companies. Competition is fierce and each manufacturer tries to continually upgrade, improve and find new ways to compete. Haul trucks are increasing in size and that fuels the market. Companies involved include Caterpillar, Demag Komatsu, Hitachi, Aveling Barford, Belaz, Volvo Construction and O&K Mining Div., recently acquired by the Terex Group.
